The Graduate Degree "Diplom"

The courses of studies for the German graduate degree "Diplom" are divided into a basic study of four semesters and a main study of another five semesters. The basic study imparts the specific methodology of a subject as well as the necessary basic knowledge which is theoretically deepened and practically applied in the main study. Special knowledge is gained in one or several subareas of the subject during the main study. In order to be able change from the basic study to the main study an intermediate examination has to be passed. The examination at the end of the study consists of a thesis, where a subject chosen has to be worked on and put down in writing within a limited time period (between six and twelve months, depending on the subject), and an oral examination as well as other written ones. The standard period of study is nine semesters.

In einer Reihe von Konferenzen beschäftigten sich die europäischen Bildungsminister mit der Angleichung der europäischen Hochschulstrukturen. Im Juni 1999 wurde schließlich in Bologna vereinbart, dieses Ziel in 30 europäischen Ländern bis zum Jahre 2010 zu erreichen (unterschrieben von 29 europäischen Bildungsministern).

Die wesentlichen Elemente der Bologna-Vereinbarung lassen sich in sechs Punkten zusammenfassen:
- Vergleichbare, gut dokumentierte Abschlüsse
- Zweistufiges System von Studienabschlüssen (Bachelor + Master, 6 + 4 Semester)
- Leistungspunktesystem (Eropean Credit Transfer System)
- Beseitigung von Mobilitätshemmnissen (d. h. Studien begleitende Prüfungen, Modularisierung etc.)
- Qualitätssicherung (Akkreditierung von Studiengängen)
- Förderung der europäischen Dimension in der Hochschulausbildung
